Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla has asserted that the government's evidence against her is unsubstantiated

The daughter of ex- South African Leader Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror-linked allegations at the commencement of her legal proceedings in the port city of the city of Durban.

The defendant, 43, is being charged over comments she made on online platforms in the past during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that came after the apprehension of her father.

A week of chaos in several parts of the country in July 2021, including plundering and intentional burning, resulted in at least 300 dead and resulted in damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).

She has been charged of fuelling this violence and confronts charges of provocation to commit terror-related activities and civil unrest.

Context of the Proceedings

The unrest were centered in the areas of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the previous president's apprehension for defying a judicial ruling to give evidence at an probe into claims of impropriety while he was in power.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has always rejected the charges against her, with her attorney earlier describing the prosecution's legal argument as unsubstantiated.

She has also frequently claimed the allegations against her were an effort to resolve political disputes with her father after he started his own political organization and competed against the ruling party.

Endorsement and Court Representation

This was echoed by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which stated the case was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "political and family-related persecution" against the ex-leader and his family.

A few of followers from her political organization, her party, appeared outside the judicial building, while her dad and other organization officials participated in the hearings inside.

The defense has stated that the testimony presented by government lawyers is insufficient and lacks concrete proof for a criminal finding.

Central Elements of the Trial

  • Social media comments from four years ago form the basis of the state's evidence
  • Violent protests in July 2021 resulted in significant casualties and monetary damage
  • The defendant faces multiple counts of encouragement to violence
  • Legal hearings are anticipated to continue for multiple court sessions

The trial continues as both sides present their cases before the judge in what is anticipated to be a highly monitored judicial process with significant policy consequences for South Africa.
